Professional counseling offers effective help in addressing stubborn problems. Everyone becomes “stuck” at some point in their lives. Relationships can be frustrating, and emotional issues can be overwhelming when we either do not know what to do or lack the focus needed to stick with a plan of action over the long term. Counseling offers a safe place to discuss highly sensitive concerns and to implement plans that empower people to make lasting change. Read more...

As a mental health professional, it has been my pleasure to provide care to people in Nebraska for nearly forty years. I entered the field as an addiction counselor working exclusively with the chemically dependent. While observing people imprisoned in patterns of repetitive behavior, I became aware of the healing potential of treatment, twelve step programs and group support. I found that solutions were available for even the most destructive, life-controlling problems. While serving in facilities where I consulted with physicians, psychiatrists and other health care specialists, I learned that emotional and medical problems are frequently interrelated.

Many of my clients seek counseling that is sensitive to their spiritual beliefs and draws upon disciplines that are part of their faith practice. As a Christian, I have a special appreciation for such preferences and understand that trust between a counselor and counselee may grow more naturally in a context of shared spiritual values. As a psychologist, I have experience helping people distinguish spiritual needs from those that primarily require clinical solutions.

I have had specialized training in sex addiction treatment, neuropsychology, geriatrics, marriage counseling and other areas. I have found the following counseling methods to be especially helpful: cognitive therapy, twelve-step facilitation, Gottman’s marriage model, Eye Movement Desensitization Reprocessing (EMDR), the Immanuel Approach and Christian counseling.

As a mental health professional, it has been my pleasure to provide care to people in Nebraska for nearly forty years. Counseling is at its core a relationship between a counselor and someone seeking assistance with resolving critical problems or achieving personal goals. Trust is the precious element that makes counseling helpful. Developing trust is a delicate matter, but once it has been established, hope increases and sustains people through the taxing effort involved in facing difficult challenges. read more...

During my years in the field, I have seen a growing interest in professional counseling people as increasingly recognize that it offers effective help in addressing stubborn problems. Everyone becomes “stuck” at some point in their lives. Relationships can be frustrating, and emotional issues can be overwhelming when we either do not know what to do or lack the focus needed to stick with a plan of action over the long term.

Speaking with a professionally trained therapist can be a healing experience because it offers a safe place to discuss concerns that are highly sensitive and typically inappropriate to address with family members and friends. It also can be an educational experience when previously unrecognized psychological and medical factors are revealed and addressed. Finally, counseling can be an enlightening experience when the journey empowers individuals to face struggles with renewed understanding and fresh inspiration.

I entered the field as an addiction counselor working exclusively with the chemically dependent. While observing people imprisoned in patterns of repetitive behavior, I became aware of the healing potential of treatment, twelve step programs and group support. I also learned that solutions were available for even the most destructive, life-controlling problems.

During my pre-doctoral internship and most years of professional employment, I served in interdisciplinary facilities where I consulted with physicians, psychiatrists and others representing a broad range of health care specialties. This taught me that emotional and medical problems are frequently interrelated and often challenging to distinguish.

In addition, as a psychologist I also have experience helping people separate spiritual needs from those that primarily require clinical solutions.
